Quite a few people asked about tools, especially for removing glazing putty and for getting windows that are painted shut to open. Some links to the Window Zipper and some putty chasing tools seem in order.
- Window Zipper on Amazon for opening windows stuck with paint
- Putty Chaser for your power drill
- The Putty Chomper for your oscillating multi tool
Now that you have the putty out, some options other than Dap '33' glazing compound.
Wood preservatives, epoxy fillers and consolidators. For all your rot repair needs.
Now a correction. Someone asked if the glazing rabbet should be brushed with boiled linseed oil before applying glazing compound. I think I answered that I wouldn't, which is incorrect. The glazing rabbet should be treated with boiled linseed oil or oil base primer before applying the compound. My apologies for that error.
That was bothering me so I checked it out at John Leeke's Historic Homeworks. In my opinion the best resource for this work on the web.
