Portable Bench at the Landmarks Preservation Resource Center |
So the portable bench fared pretty well on its first live outing for the Door Panel Replacement presentation at the Preservation Resource Center. I didn't get around to installing a vise on the bench so I worked with just holdfasts and a planing stop. All in all it worked very well but it would be useful to get a planing stop along the back edge for traverse planing and perhaps some kind of stop/crochet for edge work on the front of the bench. Those minor things aside it was an enormous improvement over the Black & Decker workmate that I used last time, those are definitely not for hand plane work. I'm sure I'm going to get a lot of use out of this bench for presentations as well as working outside when the weather is nice.
The legs come off by undoing 3 carriage bolts for each leg. That separates the bench into 3 manageable pieces that fit easily into my car. At home I store it on end in the corner with the legs beside it.
